Rich heritage, good restaurants, easy access to everywhere - not bad driving distance from Melbourne Airport (1.5 hrs) and really easy to navigate. I had no problem with traffic but that might be due to timing (ie going against the traffic). There appear to be regular trains to Melbourne although Im told getting from the airport to a connecting station is a taxi ride. Ballarat climate was refreshing for November although some might find it cool - for me it was perfect. One last thing - friendly locals and it feels like a safe place to be.

8 Great weekend get away from Melbourne.
Great weekend get away from Melbourne. Easy drive and lots of places to visit and restaurant to eat at. A walk around the Lake is lovely and there are many cafe's to stop at for a coffee / drink.

10 Beautiful historic homes and architecture.
Beautiful historic homes and architecture. Amazing lake and botanical garden. Lots of cafes and restaurants. Beautiful trees, parks and gardens. Large enough to have places of interest but compact enough to get around.

10 I always enjoy visiting Ballarat.
I always enjoy visiting Ballarat. The locals are so friendly and helpful. Matthew from the Visitor's Information Centre was incredibly helpful in helping me decide what to do. Matthew even gave tips on a great local restaurant where we dined twice (little Vietnameserestaurant). Enjoyed walking around Wendouree Lake. LOVED lunching at the lovely Such & Such which is a must visit. Loved the farmers market. Can't wait to go back.

We like to visit Ballarat, It’s an easy city/town to walk around . There’s walking trails near the centre. The mall area is very quiet and a lot of empty shops but there are adequate shops dotted around . We find the stroll to Mars stadium to take in a football game easy enough from the town centre. There’s adequate eateries. The Robin Hood hotel on weekends has a very extensive schnitzel menu, something on it for everyone. During the week it’s regular pub/ bistro fare but very tasty and good size servings . We only stayed two nights and ate there both nights.

I lived in Ballarat 40 years ago, so I am familiar with the buildings and surrounding region. Visiting in the middle of winter is a reality check for anyone who has spent years in warmer areas of Australia, but not unbearable. Keep warm and budget to go out and spend on winter clothes! One thing about the locals is a very down to earth approach to life during winter. Everyone is bundled up in coats, scarves, hats or beanies, gloves, boots, etc. This is not a fashion show but life in the Highlands during winter when the temperature can really plummet.
