Brunei is an exhibition of Islamic architecture and Bornean wildlife. Darussalam translates as the ‘abode of peace’, and its virgin rainforests are certainly somewhere you can switch off from the rest of the world. There’s plenty to do in and around capital city Bandar Seri Begawan, such as visiting the dazzling mosques of Omar Ali Saifuddien and Jame' Asri Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. The village of Kampong Ayer is a real eye opener, with hundreds of houses appearing to float on water. A trip to Ulu Temburong National Park is also a must, with guided tours and activities like treetop canopy walks and longboat river cruises available. As well as encountering the odd local on a fishing trip, you may also spot grey gibbons, pygmy squirrels and black spot rock frogs. Muara Beach is one of Brunei’s many sandy stretches and is certainly the best equipped. Here you’ll find picnic areas, a playground and a variety of stalls serving food and drinks. Most accommodation can be found in Bandar Seri Begawan, with a selection of hotels, guests houses and B&Bs available.
