Castlemaine is an interesting city with lots of accommodation and dining options. It is designed around tourism and there are lots of interesting shops and attractions. The surrounding areas are interesting too. We could have spend more time there. The town centre is easily walked.

8 with our accommation at Goldenray, there was no sitting room...
with our accommation at Goldenray, there was no sitting room, no lounges or padded chairs, no wardrobes that were open, there was no proper kitchen, we could only walk from bedroom to bedroom and up the hallway when inside, we were aware that the owner was sharing the other part of the house, not quite what we expected.

10 Accessible for travellers without a car.
Accessible for travellers without a car. Train station easy distance to town accomodation, galleries, cafes, botanic gardens, dining. For walkers, the Goldfields track passes north and south, and cyclists have access to bush trails.

10 A guided tour is offered at the Information center.
A guided tour is offered at the Information center. I would recommend this tour because we received a lot of information that gave us some great insight to Castlemaine and its history. Our guide also had some amusing tales to tell. The bush walks are also a definite plus for people who enjoy walking, with old gold mining sights as well. Also a lot of local arts and crafts on show as well. And a not to miss a visit to the Kaffee Haus. Wonderful coffee, food and what I would call really good services when the restaurant was buzzing with locals and visitors.

It is an ideal town for enthusiasts of heritage buildings and gold mining history. The Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park is close by and presents plenty of walking tracks and gold mining relics with informatory displays. For nature lovers the Mount Alexander Regional Park is ideal with plenty of granite boulders and walking tracks. A drive to the heritage town of Maldon is a must. Our favourite building in Castlemaine was the Old Gaol which houses a Gallery now. Lots of pubs and trendy cafes for nice meals in Castlemaine and Maldon. Signage to different places is very good. Good maps and info areavailable from the very friendly Information Centre in the Market Place.

We mainly came to Castlemaine to attend a birthday party that night. It was successful. A local vocal group "The Blenders" sang and I would recommend attending a performance if possible. After check out we had breakfast at Saffs Cafe which was recommended in the room literature and also by our friend. We went to the Botanic Gardens and to the Pennyweight Cemetary before heading home via the old Calder Highway, stopping to taste mineral water in Taradale and lunch at the bakery in Malmsbury.

The Cottage was tucked away behind the main house and we were greeted by a family of carolling magpies and the clucking of a couple of hens in nearby the chook pen. The Cottage was screened by native bushland which could be viewed from every window. The place was nicely appointed and had everything we required (no dishwasher, but we didn't need that). We did not get to meet our host, Shirley, but we were able to communicate by SMS, if required. Information on the local eateries was listed on an Excel spreadsheet - very handy!

Our host was lovey and greeted us when we arrived. The accommodation was very nice and modern with lovely views from the verandah. Took advantage of the relaxing big bath. The bed was very comfortable. We had lovely pastries on arrival. And it was about a 10 min walk to town, if you didn't want to drive. Castlemaine was a really cute town with some lovely old buildings.

Great little boutique motel with everything you need for a few nights stay . Complimentary sourdough bread and condiments left for us for breakfast as well as ample supply of tea and coffee . Really friendly staff who went out of their way to accomodate one of our travellers with a disability . We will definitely be back when staying in Castlemaine again.
