Historic City Comes of Age

Historic Hobart, with its convict past, was often referred to as Australia’s neglected backwater. How times have changed as its temperate climate, quiet lifestyle and fabulous food and markets make it a revitalising tourist destination along the Derwent River in Tasmania.

The city’s significant maritime history begins at Constitution Dock, situated along the waterfront and facing the beautiful harbour. Nearby Battery Point and affluent Sandy Bay feature Georgian and Victorian architecture and the first settler’s cottages in Australia’s 2nd oldest city.

Escape to a memorable view of Hobart town from the snow-covered Mount Wellington or get close up and personal in the city’s quaint streets. Hobart comes alive during the colourful Salamanca Market, held every Saturday morning, where you can bag a bargain or sample mouth-watering produce such as local wines and cheeses.

Cascade Brewery and Cadbury’s Chocolates have tours of these Tasmanian icons or visit Wrest Point Casino, a popular event and entertainment centre.

The annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race in December and Tulip Festival in the Royal Botanical Gardens swells the population in this small capital city. Make sure you check Sydney Tourism ahead of time for your colonial cottage, cosy B&B or waterfront apartment.

10 Such a small and perfect city.
Such a small and perfect city. The river, the sea, the hills are everywhere. There are so many birds and small animals and driving is a breeze. I found it to be a friendly and beautiful town with a concern for the environment that is very pleasing.

10 Hobart is a very picturesque city.
Hobart is a very picturesque city. Besides it's amazing historical attractions it has so much more to offer. There's a plethora of amazing eating experiences, art, culture, museums and beauty everywhere you look. The natural landscape, which is so close to the city and surrounding suburbs is breathtaking. Going for easy walks or a challenging hike is easily accessible, from within the city area or just a short drive away. The location is also perfect as a home base if you want to travel to the south (Port Arthur, Bruny Island), or along the stunning east coast (Freycinet National Park, Maria Island). There is so much to see and do it's an overload to your senses. We loved all the places we visited in Tasmania, and everywhere we went the people were very welcoming and friendly. We wish we didn't have to leave but we will back again, and hopefully very soon.

10 Hobart is beautiful.
Hobart is beautiful. The cooler temperatures and reduced traffic suited us perfectly. The scenery is amazing., with the most pristine, beautifully coloured water and majestic mountains. Loved Salamanca Markets and the proximity to everything. We enjoyed touring Port Arthur and had fun doing the tastings in Bruny Island. The pubs and restaurants were excellent. The food was very good. The people were very friendly. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

I've lived in Hobart 3 years ago and returned on Sunday for court work on Monday before flying back to Melbourne on Monday afternoon. I love the old, majestic buildings in Hobart intermingled with newer ones. It has a nice vibe to it and nice to see many races all calling Hobart home because its this diversity, which adds richness to the culture.

We were staying with family in Sydney and took the oportunity to come down and spend 4 nights in Hobart. We found all the people very friendly and enjoyed the contrast to Sydney in a much smaller city with less traffic. We did the hop on bus tour round the city to get our bearings and also took the bus trip up Mount Wellington. There are a lot of bus and boat trips available to surrounding areas. We did the Bruny Safaris day trip to Bruny Island which was most enjoyable and would recommend. There are some great bars around Salamanca place. For longer trips to Tasmania, a hire car would allow you to explore farther afield.
